Predator-prey interactions: is “ecological stoichiometry” sufficient when good food goes bad? HORIZONS

چکیده
The dietary value of a prey type varies with its nutritional status and hence with its C:N:P content. However, while stoichiometric differences between a heterotroph and its food must affect growth efficiency (GE), and thence trophic dynamics, other factors related to food quality may act as powerful modulators of predator-prey interactions. Thus, minor changes in prey stoichiometry can be associated with more significant changes in prey quality (production of toxins, mucus, thicker walls etc.) that may have a disproportionate effect on predation rates and GE. We term the predator response to such events, “stoichiometric modulations”. Often these modulations are negative, decreasing predation and assimilation rates. We suggest that due consideration should be given in the construction of multinutrient based models of predators to the processes of prey selectivity, ingestion and digestion as functions of food quality and quantity. © The Author 2005. متن کاملDYNAMIC COMPLEXITY OF A THREE SPECIES COMPETITIVE FOOD CHAIN MODEL WITH INTER AND INTRA SPECIFIC COMPETITIONS
The present article deals with the inter specific competition and intra-specific competition among predator populations of a prey-dependent three component food chain model consisting of two competitive predator sharing one prey species as their food. The behaviour of the system near the biologically feasible equilibria is thoroughly analyzed. Boundedness and dissipativeness of the system are e...
متن کاملPredator-Prey Dynamics Driven by Feedback between Functionally Diverse Trophic Levels
Neglecting the naturally existing functional diversity of communities and the resulting potential to respond to altered conditions may strongly reduce the realism and predictive power of ecological models. We therefore propose and study a predator-prey model that describes mutual feedback via species shifts in both predator and prey, using a dynamic trait approach. Species compositions of the t...
متن کاملPredator confusion is sufficient to evolve swarming behaviour
Swarming behaviours in animals have been extensively studied owing to their implications for the evolution of cooperation, social cognition and predator– prey dynamics. An important goal of these studies is discerning which evolutionary pressures favour the formation of swarms. One hypothesis is that swarms arise because the presence of multiple moving prey in swarms causes confusion for attack...
متن کاملThe Stability of Some Systems of Harvested Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey Equations
Some scientists are interesting to study in area of harvested ecological modelling. The harvested population dynamics is more realistic than other ecological models. In the present paper, some of the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey models have been considered. In the said models, existing species are harvested by constant or variable growth rates. The behavior of their solutions has been analyzed ...
